Man of Sorrows
Hymns
contents
Philip
Bliss
(1838 - 1878)
One of America's
finest
hymn writers. He first
made confession of Christ when he was twelve years old, and joined
himself
to the Baptist denomination. Over the years he was used by God in
singing
and writing various hymns. Both he and his wife were involved in a
fatal
train crash. At first Bliss survived, but when he went back for his
wife
he too was taken home to be with the Lord. Bliss' trunk
survived
the disaster and found in it were the words to a new hymn : "I
know not what awaits me. God kindly veils my eyes..." . The
following
is, perhaps, his best known one.
7.7.7.8
1.
Man of sorrows! What a name
For the Son of God, who came
Ruined sinners to reclaim!
Hallelujah! What a Saviour!
2.
Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
In my place condemned he stood;
Sealed my pardon with his blood:
Hallelujah!! What a Saviour!
3.
Guilty, helpless, lost were we;
Spotless Lamb of God was he:
Full atonement-can it be?
Hallelujah!! What a Saviour!
4.
Lifted up was he to die;
'It is finished!' was his cry;
Now in heaven exalted high:
Hallelujah!! What a Saviour!!
5.
When he comes, our glorious King,
All his ransomed home to bring,
Then anew this song we'll sing:
Hallelujah!! What a Saviour!
